Crit Racing For Beginners #1

The corner braking and drafting dynamics on RGT, combined with an infinite amount of opportunities to create routes through the Magic Roads, makes crit racing the most popular genre for racing on the Platform. Raw power does, however, have a lot to say. Since there is no categorization on RGT, you'll soon find yourself blown out the back on a regular crit, if you have just started racing.

That's where the "Crit Racing for Beginners" enters the picture. With a loose upper bound of an FTP of 250, it's aimed towards making crit racing competitive for people who have just entered the platform or are stronger in the mountains. "It’s basically how my journey on RGT started last year with my THRSDY crits, which has evolved into something more challenging by now. So, I hope that this gets some more people into racing on RGT" Says Alex Pleger, the man behind the event.

The first race was done on the Lissone crit, which is 1.1 km long and keeps climbing to a minimum. It was hard from the start, with lots of red numbers out the pen. To Geeme who did his only third ever race on RGT, managed to get a decent gap from the start. He was relatively fast drawn back, and the race turned into what most crit races is about - keeping the pace high and trying to stay in the right lanes at the corners. After 24 out of 25 laps, the front group was boiled down from the starting 50 to a small group of 9 riders. They had the company of at least a dozen lapped riders, which tend to make the finals rather confusing. At the last corner, Kristen Ege turned on the engine, doing 9.2 w/kg, and gapped the front group with only a little over 200 meters to go. Even though the chasing field with Ronald Broeders at the front doing 12 w/kg, closed some of the distance, the move was too strong and so well-timed, that Kristen Ege could cross the finish line, being the first winner of the "Crit Racing for Beginners" series. "It was extremely hard. I was dropped in a few corners where I had to fight back. At some point I got into a rhythm, making it a bit easier. But the sprint was extraordinarily hard." Ege told us after he crossed the finish line". "I used a lot of energy making sure Geeme did not get away. He seemed to be the strongest one amongst us". To Geeme, did set the tempo for most of the race, but was not able to finish the race for unknown reasons.

Here is the top 10 of the night

  1.   Kristen Ege                 42:32.8
  2.   Ronald Broeders         S.T
  3.   John Hardwick         S.T
  4.   Joseph Duluc         S.T
  5.   Alexander Kock         S.T
  6.   Daniel Magalhães       S.T
  7.   Simon Miller               S.T
  8.   Will Hutchins         S.T
  9.   Roberto Martí         S.T
  10.   Holly Larsen         43:48.4

The race was obviously capped at 250 watts, which is relatively hard to enforce for the race organizers. Looking at the top 10 of the race a few riders do stand out, but nothing too spectacular. The winner did 257 watts at threshold HR for 42:32 minutes, which does seem legit.

The race was streamed and commentated by Mike Lister. Watch from 38:57 to see Ege's beautiful move, attacking from the back of the pack out of the last corner.

Rasio Racing - A force to be reckoned with

Imagine this. After the usual start, where everyone sprints out the pen, you've made the front group. The pace is high, but you are confident in the draft. Within limits now. You start to notice who else is in the group. And when you start looking around, not one, not two, but five or six riders are in black jerseys with orange helmets. And you realize you've ended up in a group where half the riders are in the same team. Not only that, they are coordinated, they attack in turns, and try to play to each other's strength. This scenario is becoming more and more frequent on RGT and is the reason why Rasio Racing is so difficult to compete against.  All of the team members are capable of winning a race, none of them are afraid to work for each other. Together they are harder to beat, than most individual riders on RGT. With the addition of Andrzej Krajewski, who ended third in the Tour de Monde, the team also has a top, top climber, and seems like the Team Ineos of the RGT pla...

Stage 10 James Ross Island - Antarctica

After flying almost 13.000 kilometers southwest the TdM convoy landed at the James Ross Island in Antarctica last night. The cold weather was in stark contrast to the hotter temperature in Egypt, but overall, the scenery is pretty much the same.  Even though the hills were less than what is to come, the GC guys didn’t miss an opportunity to battle it out. Once again, the 18.30 slot was by far the fastest slot, including 9 out of the 10 best-placed riders in the GC, only missing out on Blair Drader who did time slot 3. Once again though, as we have seen before in the TdM it wasn’t the GC guys that left with the honor of the stage win. That was a fiercely battled contest between two relative newcomers to the platform, Manuel Palmar and Maxime Saonit, where the latter did get away with the victory averaging an impressive 5.14 w/kg for an hour. Former amateur world champion Igor Kopse concluded the podium 1 minute and 30 seconds down from the winner. The second hill was always going to...

A THRSDY Crit Win with Ned Bowen

Written by Ned Bowen Pre-race Check the course and the players. It is always important to know who and where you are racing! On the start list for this event was a large Rasio Racing contingent Alex Pleger, Joris Schepers, Andrzej Krajewski, Ben Phillips, Nick Greenhalgh and Jørgen Vanbers. Other strong riders I saw were James Melville, Jan Deca, Wout Hartveld, Jan Linden, Ben Skinner, Bas Van schaayk. Also on the startlist were Sammut, Lister, Rowbottom and Navin, but I am not sure they made the race. As a dabbler in RGT racing, I am not familiar with everyone, but I knew with this strong group it would be a fun race.   The course for the event was the Playa Honda crit course (a Magic Road set in the Canaries), which I had not raced before. One nice thing about short courses and long races means you can really learn and perfect a new course over the 20 laps that were on the docket! The RGT load-in screen is not the most detailed course description, but I could clearl...
